  • ENTERPRISE:  Legal entity (natural or legal person) that is an organisational unit producing goods or services, which benefits from a certain degree of autonomy in decision-making, especially for the allocation of its current resources. An enterprise carries out one or more activities at one or more locations.
  • ECONOMIC ACTIVITY:  Combination of resources such as labour, raw materials, equipment, etc., are joined, leading to the creation of specific goods or services. Regardless of the factors of production integrating the good or service produced, all activities generically imply an input of products (goods or services), a production process and an output of products (goods or services).
  • ECONOMIC TERRITORY:  Territory that consists on: (a) the geographic territory administered by a government within which persons, goods, services and capital move freely; (b) any free zones, including bonded warehouses and factories under customs control; (c) the national air-space, territorial waters and the continental shelf lying in international waters, over which the country enjoys exclusive rights; (d) territorial enclaves (i.e. geographic territories situated in the rest of the world and used, under international treaties or agreements between States, by general government agencies of the country (embassies, consulates, military bases, scientific bases, etc.); (e) deposits of oil, natural gas, etc., in international waters outside the continental shelf of the country, worked by units resident in the territory as defined in the preceding subparagraphs.

Observations The Economic Activity Indicator is a synthetic indicator estimated from the following series: manufacturing industry production index adjusted for working days (Source: INE), industrial production index of intermediate goods adjusted for working days (Source: INE), overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments (Source: INE), deflated retail trade turnover index (Source: INE), electricity consumption adjusted for temperature (Source: REN), fuel sales (Source: DGEG) (gasoline and diesel aggregated by energy equivalents), sales of new light passenger vehicles and heavy and light commercial vehicles (Source: ACAP), consumer confidence indicator (Source: INE), cement sales in the domestic market (Sources: CIMPOR, SECIL and INE), industrial production index of investment goods adjusted for calendar and working day effects (Source: INE), opinions about firm's current activity and expectations on the development of order books of entrepreneurs in the wholesale trade of investment goods (Source: INE), unemployed and employed population (Source: INE), job placements along the period at state employment agencies (Source: IEFP), economic sentiment indicator in the Euro Area (Source: European Commission), evaluation of order-book levels for manufacturing industry of Portugal's main trading partners (Sources: European Commission, OECD and INE), consumer confidence indicator in the Euro Area (Source: European Commission), industrial production index of Portugal's main trading partners (Sources: Eurostat, OECD, ONS and INE). The methodology of this indicator is based on factor analysis and the final calibration considers as a reference the year-on-year rates of change in the Gross Domestic Product (National Accounts, Base 2021).
